My
Experience as an ET (Electronics Technician) Aboard the Vega
by Lyle Hildebrand
I joined the Navy January 11th, 1956, went to Great Lakes for boot camp and then
to Treasure Island for ET "A" School. After completing the school I was assigned
to the USS Vega in late (about) October 1956.
When I reported aboard, the previous ET had already left. He had removed all of
the vacuum tubes from the bridge radar repeater. I think it took me about a week
to get the thing operational again! Each of the circuits had to be re-adjusted
after installing the vacuum tubes. Was it a test of my knowledge/skills?
Probably.
A few times I had to climb the radar mast to service the radar antenna
mechanism. This was a "big deal" to me, enjoyable and offered a great view.
I always considered myself fortunate and a little privileged to be a part of
Bridge Operations and to be in the Combat Information Center. I also had some
freedom to be on the 03 level during replenishment at sea operations and to take
pictures. One time I had to help below decks loading pallets.
A few times I had to cut through the wardroom area (for some reason) and always
felt apprehensive about being in "God's Country"! Being on the Vega was a period
of growing up and losing the "innocence" of being a small town, Iowa boy.
