USS Vega's First Executive Officer

 

                    THE EXECUTIVE OFFICER
     Lieutenant Commander Louis C. Hambley, born in Nebraska in 1915, enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 10, 1935 and underwent recruit training at San Diego, California. Service followed aboard the battleships CALIFORNIA, NEW MEXICO and MARYLAND as a signalman. Assigned to duty with the Asiatic Fleet in 1939, he saw service on the submarine TARPON and the ships FINCH, BITTERN and PECOS.
      The outbreak of World War II found him in Manila Bay and for the duration of the war, he served aboard various ships; the last of which, the U. S. S. INDIANA, he helped to decommission in Bremerton, Washington after the war. Lieutenant Commander Hambley had been commissioned a Chief Boatswain in 1943 and in 1946 he was appointed a Lieutenant (junior grade).
      As Executive Officer and Navigator, he served aboard the U. S. S. CHICKASAW (ATF-83) until March 1950 when he reported to Fleet Activities, Sasebo, Japan for duty as Communications Officer.
      From February 1953 until he received his present orders, Lieu-tenant Commander Hambley has been assigned to the  U.S. Naval Recruiting Station and Office of Officer Procurement, San Francisco, California.
